Excellent article that illustrates the many aspects of a group that is often overlooked in UX design. Too often, in my UX practice, I have seen a push to build interfaces that are focused on the needs and desires of a certain, younger demographic, while pushing aside many aspects of usability. These activities, while boosting traffic, overlook groups that cannot or will not embrace the new design and unfortunately abandon the site. Considering some of the information presented in this article will help to realize the needs and desires of this group, potentially attracting and retaining these individuals, as well. The result could be a larger boost in traffic and interaction, merely by including some aspects of usability that usually do not impact the project cost or scope.

I appreciate the reminder that this article provides. There are several groups, not just the aging population, that are often overlooked and could have a positive impact on how well your new products are embraced. Thank you.

Many thanks for all the positive feedback and, as mentioned elsewhere, I really do feel it’s an incredibly exciting and important time to be in the involved in this area!

As a UX practitioner with extensive experience in designing for accessibility this is a subject too many of our colleagues do not take into consideration when they design experiences, but one that, as your insightful article points out, without a doubt will be something we, as designers, will ALL have to keep in mind in the very near future.

Usually it is only government sites that are required by law to implement Accessibility Design, but going forward this approach will not only be helpful, but in the long term ends up delivering a superior experience, whether the user is aware of it or not.

Thanks for such a well thought out and informative post.
