Sketchnote: Surgery and the Senses



The sketchnote consists of small drawings with the following text:

  • Optic nerve has about 1.5 million optic fibres in it. (The eye is) Like a camera”
  • A 3D printed heart about the size of a fist – used in unusual cases.
  • Hand-eye coordination. Audience exercise: A minute to navigate between the maze (tests navigating at a distance)
  • How do you navigate between these points: St. Pauls, Big Ben – in a person, in the street)
  • Using an endoscope to remove the gall bladder through the mouth. An endoscope is a flexible tube with a camera and a hole for additional tools)
  • The joystick receives feedback and can perform many functions (performed by many people.)
  • Seeing things you can’t touch. Feeling things you can’t see.
  • Changing the way surgeons operate
  • 2D and 3D models in surgery. It’s not always possible to have a 3D model as the technology isn’t small enough.

On 2nd April 2014, Professor Roger Kneebone and Dr Fernando Bello explored the fascinating world of keyhole surgery at the Royal Institution in London.
